One of the big rumors going into the D23 Expo in Anaheim was that Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World would be getting the TRON Lightcycle Power Run coaster, which has been a huge hit at Shanghai Disneyland since opening last year. The rumor was that it would be replacing the Tomorrowland Speedway, sparking premature outrage from some fans.
Well, half of that rumor was true. Tomorrowland at the Magic Kingdom will be home to the attraction, but the park won’t be losing the Speedway. As can be seen in the concept art, the TRON coaster will sit behind Space Mountain just to the right of the Speedway track. That’s right, we get a new attraction in Tomorrowland without losing an old one.
While I personally wouldn’t have been too sad to see the Speedway go, it’s great to see Disney adding attraction capacity to its flagship Florida park instead losing one attraction to gain another. That said, we’re still waiting for news that Stitch’s Great Escape is being closed for good to be replaced with something better. We’ll have to wait on that though.
Disney plans to have the new attraction open in time for Disney World’s 50th anniversary celebration in 2021. We can’t wait mount a lightcycle for a thrilling ride without buying a plane ticket to Shanghai. How about you?
